Franca: Chaos and Creation

Tuesday, October 31, 2017

This past week I watched a documentary on Netflix all about the life of Franca Sozzani, the Editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia. It was filmed by her son, Francesco Carrozzini, and it covered everything from her personal life, work life, and the controversy that surrounded it all. The documentary really gives the audience a look inside the fashion industry through the eyes of one of the most powerful women in it. Sadly, on December 22, 2016 Franca passed away but this documentary does an amazing job at capturing how she changed fashion and media forever.

Franca was best friends with Gianni Versace and they helped give models like Linda, Christy, and Naomi global fame due to "double exposure" (catwalks to magazine covers) and the press named them "super models" which was an unprecedented phenomenon.

Above was Franca's first issue as Editor-in-chief and below are some of my favorite editorials under her command.

Vogue Italia October 1989
"Bentornata Christy"
Model: Christy Turlington
Photographer: Steven Meisel
Hair: Oribe
Makeup: Francois Nars

Vogue Italia June 1992
Model: Cindy Crawford
Photographer: Michel Comte
Stylist: Marina Schiano
Hair: Cemal
Makeup: Carol Shaw

Vogue Italia October 2006
"The One and Only"
Model: Kate Moss
Photographer: Mario Testino

Franca didn't care if the designer clothes were cute out of an editorial, she just wanted to evoke a feeling throughout each shot.

Would highly recommend giving this documentary a go if you're interested in the fashion industry!
